artist's
statement
"My
work is inspired by real-life situations. I find beauty and elegance in
the forms, patterns, and rhythms that exist naturally in the universe.
I try to record single, quiet moments within this constant state of change.
My subject
matter includes life-drawings of the human body, and still-lifes consisting
of abstract forms found in nature. I work from direct observation or photographs.
I take artistic direction from my subject regarding medium and color.
My work is usually created on a large scale, on either canvas or paper,
and is rendered in various combinations of acrylic, pastels, pencil and
charcoal.
I observe
my subjects up close, resulting in simple compositions that create high
drama. I would describe my work as quasi-realism, guided by the free-flowing,
expressive strokes that are natural to me.
Every
subject has its own complexity—a mystery, a certain energy, a beauty,
and an ugliness. I aim to look past what we usually see on a skin-deep
level and confront the viewer with a new understanding—on a scale
larger than life."
